Hyper-V and SCVMM 2008: Mounting ISO’s from a network share

Hyper-V and SCVMM 2008: Mounting ISO’s from a network share

We get a lot of questions on why you cannot mount an ISO from a network share in System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008.

Well.. you CAN mount an ISO but it requires some additional configuration.

You need to take the following steps:

1. Open Active Directory Users and Computers and open the Hyper-V hosts computer account properties

2. Configure the computer account of the Hyper-V host for constrained delegation so that it can access the share where the ISO’s are stored. (DP-VMM01, our Virtual Machine Manager Library server, in the example below)

NOTE: It might take a couple minutes for the Active Directory changes to take effect.

3. Next, add read permissions for the computer account of the Hyper-V host to the Virtual Machine Manager Library share. (Also make sure that the appropriate NTFS permissions are set.)

That’s it, now you are able to mount ISO images over the network in Virtual Machine Manager.

There is a very important note to this. This is only supported for mounting ISO’s.

It’s unsupported for VHD’s.
